One of the quickest '73 Birds I've ever heard of, which runs the D-port 455, was owned at the time by Adam Davis, & raced out of div 2.

Besides the quick times, what caught my eye was the loud yellow color. Also, it has the '71 fender vents, but is raced as a '73. As we've mentioned, NHRA seems to let minor things like that slide, nowadays.

I'll check my records & see when I 1st noticed the car.

1st time it pops up on my radar is in 2015. Adam was from Alabama. So, I'm wondering if Michael Brand & his '73 Bird had anything to do with Adam running one. My guess is yes. Just too much of a coincidence that 2 almost identical Pontiac powered Stockers would be run out of the same state, in div 2. Guessing that Michael helped Adam with his car, a LOT. They were entered in a bunch of the same races. Would surprise me if they travel & didn't pit together.

OK, as ya'll may have noticed, the '73 Bird that was #2 qualifier had a familiar name, Ryan Schloe.

We talked about his car as a '71 Bird, running the 455 with #66 D-port heads. It ran OK. But, as we've seen, the '73 Bird with the 4X head 455 is a much better combo. Several guys have proven that to be the case.

So, in this post we'll look at some results of Ryan's races, driving the 4X head 455 Formy.

10/13/13- Vegas SN - #43 - .687 under - So far, this is the earliest i can find Ryan's Bird running Stock, as a '73 model.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 3#indextop

He also ran it at the Vegas Toyota Nats & the Pomona Finals that year. Got it down to an 11.188.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 3#indextop

Here's a couple of pics from when it was running F/SA.

Well, PTL !

I can post again.

IP address blacklist problem solved, I hope.

For those who don't know, I was blocked, because my router's IP address was on a couple of blacklists. Must have been hacked, or whatever. An online check of my IP address showed that it was in the state of WA. I live in Louisiana.

New name.

So, I'll continue talking about Pontiac powered Stockers.

OK, let's pick up where we left off, talkin about Ryan Schloe's '2nd gen Bird, after he began running it as a '73 model, with the 4X head 455 engine.

At the 2014 Winter Nats, he was #43 @ .750 under, with an 11.10.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 4#indextop

3/22/14 - div 7-2 - #41 - .764 under

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 4#indextop

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 4#indextop

Unless I'm missing something, looks like both John & Ryan Schloe did not race any of the NHRA div 7 Lucas Oil Series or National events, for most of '2014 & '15. In fact, it appears that they've raced a lot less, in the last few years, than they did in many of the earlier years.

Another '73 Bird Stocker some of you may have noticed on some of the Q-lists, belongs to Allen Hollingsworth.

I see that Allen's Bird is listed as a '71, in 2015. By 2017, it's listed as a '73. So, like others, he must have seen that the '73 was a more competitive combo. Looks like he came down South, in Feb, to do some racing before it warmed up, back home in IL. He's listed at the 1st div 2 race, in Florida.

2/25/17 - div 2-1 - #22 - .763 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 0#indextop

3/11/17 - div 2-2 - #19 - .892 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

4/30/17 - div 3-1 - #29 - .579 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

5/27/17 - Jegs Sports Nats - #66 - .783 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

6/3/17 - div 3-3 - #18 - .848 under

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

8/5/17 - div 3-5 - #34 - .791 under

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

8/13/17 - div 3-6 - #63 - .670 under

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

9/29/17 - Midwest Nats - #26 - .867 under

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

2/24/18 - div 2-1 - #12 - .879 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 8#indextop

3/10/18 - div 2-2 - #10 - .971 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 8#indextop

His Bird will run 10's occasionally, if need be. Ran a 10.98 in this 2nd round G/SA heads-up race.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 8#indextop

3/15/18 - Gators - #28 - .993 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 8#indextop

Well, right now, I can't find his name listed on any Q-lists after the '18 Gators. Not sure why.

I love this last pic. It shows 3 div 3 Pontiacs together. Allen's Bird is behind Don Turk's '71 T-37, & beside Todd Kuhn's '70 GTO. They may all be racing buddies. I remember seeing a '70 GTO listed, with Allen as the driver. So, I assume that Todd bought it from Allen. Not sure yet.

Right now, I can't think of any other '73 model Pontiac Stockers that have been active in recent years.

So, we'll look at some '74 models. And there are a LOT of 'em. So, this will be a long section. I'll start with '74 A-bodies.

The 1st one that comes to mind is the '74 Grand Am, that was raced by Don Turk, for several years. In the earlier 2000's, he's listed as driving a '68 GTO.

So, I'll begin with the earliest list I can find the GA on.

4/28/12 - div 3-1 - #48 - .734 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 2#indextop

6/8/13 - div 3-3 - #35 - .715 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 3#indextop

By 2015, it was a couple of tenths quicker. @ Indy it made the 128 car field. Was #110 @ .903 under.

9/4/15 - US Nats - #110 - .903 under -

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

9/25/15 - Midwest Nats - #8 - .943 under - It was the highest qualified Pontiac on this Q-list.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

10/11/15 - Indy Fall Classic - #29 - .924 under

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

9/3/16 - US Nats - N/SA Class Winner

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 6#indextop

8/11/17 - div 3 race @ Indy - #2 - Don was #2 & got down to 3 cars. He tripped the red light, but would have needed a great run, since his opponent cut a perfect .000 light.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 0#indextop

He put his GA up for sale & bought a '71 T-37, which was the original Rock Running "Super Sleeper", which we have mentioned. Was only asking $10,500 for the GA. That was a bargain. Couldn't built one like it for near that price. If I'd had the money, I'd have bought it myself.

The GA ended up being driven by Logan Galbraith. He's done very well with it.

10/20/18 - div 3-6 - #53 - .796 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 8#indextop

Logan ran a full schedule in 2019. He came out strong, winning the 1st div 3 race ! :)

5/7/19 - div 3-1 - Won Stock !

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 9#indextop

He also won Stock at the Ohio Valley National Open ! Can't find a results list. But, I'll post a winner's circle pic from that race.

8/30/19 - US Nats - Ran an 11.963, which was 1.037 under & good enuff for #75 position on the Stock Q-list.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 0#indextop

Hey, that ain't a bad season, when you win 2 races & run more than a sec under, at the US Nats !

He came all the way down to South Louisiana, for the 1st div 4 race of the season. Ran 11.958, which is 1.042 under.

3/1/20 - div 4-1 - #13 - 11.958 - 1.042 under

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 0#indextop

Ran an 11.943 in the N/SA class final, against Wayne Larsen, in a '77 Pontiac Lemans. That MAY be the best ET yet, for the GA. Don't know.

The next '74 A-body we'll look at is driven by Tommy Brown.

It's a regular 2-door Lemans. Most all these '74's we'll look at run the 4X head 400 engine. It currently has an NHRA hp factor rating of 275hp.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/EngineSpe ... KE=Pontiac

Tommy usually qualifies near the top of the Q-list, often higher than other strong Pontiacs.

Not sure when he 1st raced this car. Here it is at the '13 Winter Nats.

2/15/13 - Winter Nats - #32 - .809 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 3#indextop

11/7/13 - Pomona Finals - #29 - .843 under

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 3#indextop

2/6/14 - Winter Nats - #34 - .807 under

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 4#indextop

Here's a div 7 race from April '15, where he was .908 under, good enuff for #20 position.

4/18/15 - div 7-2 - #20 - .908 under

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

5/23/15 - div 7-3 - #7 - .884 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

5/30/15 - Fontana Pacific Sports Nats - #18 - .812 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

2/11/16 - Winter Nats - #8 - .987 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 6#indextop

4/9/16 - div 7-2 - #9 - .913 under.

5/21/16 - div 7-3 - #16 - .829 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 6#indextop

2/24/17 - AZ Nats - #30 - .792 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

3/4/17 - div 7-1 - #19 - .904 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

5/20/17 - div 7-3 - #17 - .771 under

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

11/8/18 - Pomona Finals - #15 - .899 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 8#indextop

3/23/19 - Stock/SS @ Pacific Nat Open - #13 - .794 under.

https://www.facebook.com/nhrad7/photos/ ... =3&theater

7/18/19 - div 7-4 - #33 - .819 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 9#indextop

The consistent performance proves that this is a very competitive combo.

OK, you can't talk about competitive '74 Pontiacs without mentioning the '74 Ventura.

I think we've mentioned that the '74 US Nats Stock winner was a '74 Ventura & that Rock Running's '74 GTO also won it's class at that race. We've also mentioned other strong running '74 Pontiac X-bodies, which have held lots of national records, thru the years.

But, for this '74 section I'll just mention the '74 Pontiac X-bodies that show up on race records in this century. The 1st one we'll look at belongs to Bill Rink. In the early 2000's, it was very quick against it's index, qualifying #1 on lots of qualifying lists, all over the country. Ran more than a sec under it's index many times. Bill admits that his consistent quick qualifying times resulted in a big hp increase from NHRA. That alone made the '74 X-body combo non-competitive for most others. It eventually raised the hp factor to 277hp, which is higher than some 400 4-barrel engine combos. That last big increase must have come in 2005. The current 277hp factor is dated for Nov of '05. After that, Bill said he decided to switch the car over to Super Stock, where the hp factor is only 250hp. He's done quite well with it, in SS.

http://www.classracerinfo.com/EngineSpe ... KE=Pontiac

So, lets take a look at some of the quick numbers Bill's little 350 powered GTO put up. There are so many, it would take many hours & pages to list 'em all. So, I'll just hit a few, then maybe come back later, when/if I have time & add some more.

Since I said only this century, we'll look at the year 2000, first.

8/31/00 - US Nats - #13 - 1.128 under.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 0#indextop

2/2/01 - Winter Nats - #1 - 1.350 under !

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 1#indextop

2/15/01 - AZ Nats - #1 - 1.384 under !

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 1#indextop

2/24/01 div 7-2 - #2 - 1.398 under !

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 1#indextop

Here's a quote from Bill, about that trip. " As I recall, that was the trip out west that I shouldn't have made. I picked up 8 HP on that junket."

At the '01 Gators he was more than a sec under & was the K/SA class winner.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 1#indextop

3/23/01 - O'reily Nats - #5 - 1.260 under & K/SA class winner.

He was also more than a sec under at the first 2 div 3 races of '01, as well the the nat event at Topeka, where he was the J/SA class winner.

Re: Pontiac V8 Powered Stock Class History

I only know of one '74 GTO Stocker that is quicker than the one which Bill Rink ran back in the early years of this century. It has been said that Bill's quick times were because of the expertise of Parsons & Myers Racing Engines. As mentioned, because of the big NHRA hp hits, VERY few guys would attempt to run a '74 GTO in Stock.

A guy named Brad Koivisto has a '74 GTO that has run some real low 11's, which is a bit quicker than Bill went. I've read that he has actually changed the cor over to a regular Ventura, rather than the GTO he had been running. I don't really know the reason for the change, unless it's a slight weight change, which may allow it to run in a different class. The NHRA hp factor is the same for all Ventura body styles.

The big power for Brad's Pontiac is said to come from Line Performance Racing.

Let's look at some race results for Brad's 350 powered Pontiac Stocker.

The 1st time I ever noticed Brad's name was at this race, in 2015. Although it ran 11.90, that wasn't too impressive, at the time.

By June of 2016, the car was much quicker.

6/4/16 - div 3-3 - #5 - 11.327 - .973 under.

How about this performance ? 11.068, which was 1.082 under ! So far, that's the best time I've seen, for the car.

1974 Firebird Stockers.

There have been quite a few '74 bird Stockers, thru the years. But one really stands out in my mind. It was driven by Bob Mulry, & powered by the 4X head 400. I think Bob Aceves may have also had a hand in this car.

From what I've seen, this car may have qualified more than a sec under it's index, more than any other Pontiac. It qualified more than 1.5 sec under, several tines. Also set a national record in J/SA, K/SA, & L/SA. For the L/SA record run, they had to swap out the Formula hood, and bolt on all the T/A body parts.

Here are a few of it's #1 qualifying efforts. There were probably many others I don't know about. But, these will show what I mean.

@ the 2004 US Nats, it was #4 qualifier @ 1.274 under, & won it's K/SA class. That's an awesome performance !

Also notice that Bryan Phillips was the E/SA winner, in his '67 Bird.

I'll post pics of the car, in it's Formula trim.
