And of course, the other '67 Bird Stocker is driven by Randi Lyn Shipp. It is very familiar to most Pontiac fans, and to the entire Stock racing world. IIRC, she has won 7 National events. Don't know how many division & smaller races, nor class wins. Not gonna attempt to list all her wins, in this post. Might come back later in the thread & list some more.

Before talkin about any more '68 Birds, let's look at some '68 GTO's.

The 1st 2 look they raced in an older time period. The others look to have raced a bit later. The last 2 are the only '68 GTO's that I am aware of, which have raced in recent years. I'm not familiar with the one in the 3rd pic. For all I know, it may be one of the other cars, just repainted & with a different owner. It has what appears to be a div 1 permanent number, maybe #1333.

I'll check around & see if I can find more info on these cars.

The #1333 F/SA '68 I posted belonged to Bob Attridge, from NY. He ran IHRA races. Found him listed at a few races on DRC, from '98 thru 2006. Best ET I found was an 11.68. Don't know what has happened to it since '06.

The Tim Gillespie '68 GTO ran mostly real low 11's. Turned 11.06 for 2011 US Nats qualifying.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 1#indextop

Went 11.03 in 2012, to make the 128 car field.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 2#indextop

Won F/SA in 2013 on his opponent's DQ.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 3#indextop

Did find a 10.979, in the F/SA class final at the Northern Sportsnationals, in 2012.

Now for some '68 Bird Stockers from the modern era. Let's start on the West Coast.

Bob Aceves had a silver '68 Bird which ran strong.

1st time he shows up on a DRC search is at Sonoma, in 2008. Ran .954 under, good for #15 qualifying position.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=164992

At Vegas that year, he was #9 @ 1.307 under. Also notice that Bob Mulry was #1 @ 1.599 under, in a '74 Bird ! We'll talk about his car more, later.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=172913

The car consistently qualified near the top of the list, at more than a sec under, back in '08 & '09. At this div 7 race, he got R/U to another strong '68 Bird. We'll also talk more about it, later.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=192787

DRC posted these pics.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCPhoto.asp?ID=254964

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCPhoto.asp?ID=267990

He was #1 at this Vegas div 7 race, in 2014.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=294035

DRC posted another pic.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCPhoto.asp?ID=294143\

He was #1 qualifier & won this Pacific National Open race !

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=326318

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=326376

At the Pomona Finals race of 2017, he ripped off a 10.51, which was good enuff for the #4 position. Don't know what his quickest time ever was.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 0#indextop

As of right now, the last record I can find of him racing the car was in March of 2018. Don't know if he retired it, or what.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... T#indextop

I'll do some snoopin around & see if I can find more info on this Bird. Will edit this post & add more later.

The other strong '68 Bird, on the West Coast has been driven by Leo Glasbrenner. At many races, he qualified higher on the list than Bob Aceves.

The 1st time his Bird shows up on DRC is at Vegas in April of 2005. It's running E/SA.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

By July, he'd picked it up a bit, with a .959 under run of 11.041.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

By the Pomona Finals race, he'd broke into the 10's @ more than a sec under, which was good enuff for the #5 qualifying position.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

Leo won his F/SA class at the 1st big Vegas race of '06.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 6#indextop

He got R/U at the Pomona Finals !

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 6#indextop

He may have done good at some smaller races. But, DRC didn't start listing all the div races 'til 2012. So, I only have results from the national events.

He won his F/SA class at the 1st '07 Vegas race, again, as well as the 2nd Vegas race.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

Made it to the semi-final round of Stock elims, at that 2nd Vegas race.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 7#indextop

He won the E/SA class at the Fontana Pacific Sports Nats.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 8#indextop

He was the #1 qualifier at the July '09 Sonoma race, at 1.239 under, with a 10.761.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 9#indextop

He won the E/SA class at the Vegas Nats.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 9#indextop

He qualified #3 at the Pomona Finals.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 9#indextop

IN 2010, he was #2 at the 1st Vegas race & #5 at the Vegas Nats.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 0#indextop

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 0#indextop

Also #5 at the Pomona Finals.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 0#indextop

More of Leo's race results to come.

Re: Pontiac V8 Powered Stock Class History

I realize that many, if not most, are not interested in the details of what some Pontiac Stock class racer may have done, years ago. But, I am. And I assume a few others may be, too. But most would not go to the trouble of looking thru all the DRC files to dig out the Pontiac stuff that may be important. To me, qualifying high on the list is important, because it shows how competitive a car may be, when faced with a same class, heads-up race. For all those not interested in these details, you may be bored with this, & probably should just avoid it. For those who are interested, enjoy ! I am glad to look up & post these details, not only for my enjoyment, but as a service to other Pontiac lovers who may be interested, either now or in the future.

This is by no means exhaustive. If the car didn't qualify in the top ten, or win class, or get to at least the semi-final round, I usually won't even mention that race. This leaves out a few races where the car may have won 4 rounds, only to get beat in the quarter-final round. Winning 4 rounds of elims is quite an accomplishment, at most races.

Also, I will occasionally make a mistake, like posting the same link twice. So, if ya'll see one that I don't catch, please mention it & I'll try to edit & fix it.

In 2011, Leo was #3 at the Winter Nats.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 1#indextop

At the 2012 Winter Nats, he went 1.017 under, with a 10.383, in C/SA, good enuff for #2.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 2#indextop

He was #3 at the AZ Nats, where 4 of the top 7 were Pontiacs !

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 2#indextop

Leo began 2014 with a #1 @ the Winter Nats. It was a 1.094 under, 10.456 pass.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 4#indextop

#8 @ the AZ Nats. Half of those top 8 were Pontiac powered !

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 4#indextop

With only 3 cars left, Leo took himself out, with a red light. :( His opponent cut his slowest light of the race. But, the round before, he'd cut a perfect .000 light. Sometimes you beat yourself with either a slow light or a red light. There are lots of ways to lose. Hey, if it was easy, anybody could do it.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 4#indextop

#10 at the div 7-1 race, with 3 other Pontiacs joining him in the top 10. Michael Brand got R/U in his '73 Formy.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 4#indextop

Leo won his D/SA class @ the Vegas Summit Nats race.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 4#indextop

#6 @ the div 7-5 race. 4 of the top 7 were Pontiac powered, including #1.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 4#indextop

He lost the semi, in a close double breakout race.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 4#indextop

In 2015, he was #6 @ the AZ Nats.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

#10 @ div 7-1 race

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

#11 @ the Vegas Summit Nats. Brad Burton was R/U.

#11 @ div 7-4 race

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

#6 @ the Pacific Sports Nats

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

Leo got R/U at this race.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

#1 @ div 7-6. 4 of top 7 Pontiac powered, again !

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 5#indextop

For 2016, how 'bout a 10.259, good enuff for #3 at the AZ Nats ! I don't have a clue what Leo's best time with the Bird is. But 10.25 for a legal '68 Bird Stocker ain't too shabby, at all.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 6#indextop

Leo made it to the semi-final round, where he lost to Randi Lyn Shipp, who won the race in her '67 Bird.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 6#indextop

He won the Spring Vegas nat ! It was an All-Pontiac final ! :)

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 6#indextop

At Sonoma, Leo was #11 & got R/U. In the final, he cut his worst light of the race, & his opponent cut his best light of the race.

And he wins another national event ! :)

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 8#indextop

#5 @ div 7-5 race. Norman Warling's '62 Cat was #1, & Brad Burton won the race.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 8#indextop

#6 @ div 7-6 race.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 8#indextop

Leo got treed in the semi-final round.

@ the 2019 Winter Nats, Leo left a bit to soon, in the semi-final round.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 9#indextop

#6 @ the AZ Nats.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 9#indextop

#10 @ div 7-1.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 9#indextop

#8 @ div 7-3 race.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 9#indextop

He lost a double breakout final & had to settle for R/U, again.

https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStor ... 9#indextop

Well, I suppose that about winds it up for the Leo Glassbrenner '68 Firebird Stocker.

In July he began racing a late model Factory Stock(FS) car, in Stock. I read where he'd said he wanted to sell either the '68 Stocker or his Pontiac powered 4th gen Super Stock Bird. I suppose he sold the '68. But I don't know for sure. I do know that he continued to race his SS class 4th gen Bird.

Anyhow, his '68 Bird was a strong performer which had lots of top 10 qualifying positions. It also won lots of rounds, & a few races.

Years ago, in this area Miami-Hollywood was the 1/4 mile strip to go to. Two buddies of mine at the time built a 57 Chevy 4 dr wagon with 3 speed stick and 4.56 rear gearing and ran stock classes. Bracket racing wasn't underway yet but started around '69 as I recall. We always ran stock.

Originally, the engine was a 283 bored out. Everything was balanced and we ran heads and a single 4 barrel that allowed us to run in M/S. Later, we upgraded the engine and ran a 30-30 solid lifter Duntov cam and the right heads with dual quads put us in J/S. (about 275 hp) The car was campaigned regularly in Florida's heat and humidity and we ran low 14s with "cheater" slicks in the car's final power configuration. As I recall, the National Record was in the high 13s for J/S. So, we were pretty close considering the next to nothing budget we had.

The three of us took turns driving the car and from time to time won our class. One of my buddies who was the "primary" wrench on the car was burdened with a black cloud hanging over his turn to drive. Not once did he win but was the only one of us to "break" parts or make a perfectly tuned engine falter on launch. When I drove the car the last time and won our class, I gave the trophy to him; at least he would have something to look at.

Later two of us sold our interest in the car to him and he transformed a drag race car into a street car. One of our mutual friends bought a shiny new 396 Nova SS after driving a beat up old VW bug for years and challenged the wagon in a street race on a newly paved road out in the sticks. That wagon smoked that street Nova. Not once, not twice, but three times in a row. Amazing feat as my buddy never won at the strip driving it. That wagon was later sold to another friend who was in the Marine Corps and I never saw the car again. The next time I saw my Marine friend he was driving a GTO and I never got an answer on what happened to the wagon. All of this took place between '67 and '69. My marine friend went off to Nam and regretfully, I never saw him again. I did get to drive that GTO and that was enough to convert me into a full fledged Pontiac enthusiast. Good memories overall. It was a fun time. The drag photos and info is nostalgic for me. Thanks for posting. ;)
